ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Home science laid its genesis since the inception of this premier

Institute, 1913. Initially, Home science was introduced to students at the higher secondary

Level and then at the degree level in 1981-82 with Honours with 16 students. Introduced as Major Elective in 2006 with more than 100 non-Home Science students. The postgraduate degree also introduced in 1983 with 16 seats, which further extended to 32 seats (present strength).The Department leaped to new heights with the introduction of MPhil course in 2016 with 08 students.

Mission & Vision

MISSION

  • To create a transformative educational experience for students focused on deep disciplinary knowledge, problem solving, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, promoting intellectual growth and shaping their personality.
  • To empower the students by providing the basic knowledge about Fundamentals of Human Nutrition, Human Development, Communication and Extension Education by making significant contribution of Science applied at home and to produce professionals who serve the Family, Community and Society as a whole.
  • The Department of Home science is committed to encourage the undergraduate students to use English as a medium of reading and writing.

VISION

❖ To play a lead role in contributing to the advancement of the teaching excellence by undertaking relevant social research and outreach.

❖ To establish the five Professional Departments of Home Science in each

  1. Department of Food and Nutrition
  2. Department of Advanced Human Development
  3. Department of Textile Science
  4. Department of Resource Management
  5. Department of Communication and Extension

❖ To foster creativity and generate employability for the students.

Research Projects

Dr. Ajanta Nayak Pursuing a major research project as Principal Investigator with Department of Science & Technology, Government of Odisha. Amount of funding- Rs.9.56, 000 with one year completed. Title –study of developmental stagnancy of rice cultivars varying its panicle architecture and its impact on grain morphology, quality, and yield.

Efficient faculty members: Senior two faculty members of Department having PhD and among them Smt. Indurekha Mahapatra, Dr. Ajanta Nayak are engaged supervising PG and MPhil students for dissertation work.

Department of Home Science offers bridge courses to Undergraduate Science/Arts/Commerce in ethics and values and Postgraduate students Arts/Science in Women and Society to prepare them for higher education, employment and different life skills for orientation in social living.

 Undergraduate Students of Home Science are encouraged to attend bridge courses given by English (Communication skills), Mathematics (Logical Reasoning), and Botany (Environmental Science). Postgraduate Students of Home Science are encouraged to attend bridge courses offered by Computer science department, Sociology and Political Science (Women and Society) for higher employability opportunity and healthy social understanding.

Society

Apart from curricular activities students are encouraged to participate in different clubs and associations for better understanding in welfare activities for the society. They are inspired to participate in National Cadet Crops, National Service Scheme, Youth Red Cross, Rovers and Rangers, Prakruti Mitra Club, Eco Club, Photography Club, Literay and Debating Society, Dramactic Society, Athletic Society and Student Representative Cell.
