OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Library and Information Science in Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College is the first College to impart Library Science Education in Government Institutions in Odisha.

  1. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

 

 

  1. To educate the students to respond to the changing information needs of
  2. To give the students an understanding of the basic principles and theories of Library and Information Science.
  3. To develop proficiencies and abilities of students essential for management of Libraries and Information
  4. To enable the students to understand the role of Libraries and Information Centers in socio-economic development of the
  5. To acquaint the students with Information and Communication Technology and its applications in Libraries and Information

 

  1. PROGRAMME OUTCOME

On completion of the programme, the students will be able to;

PO1-Students will able to understand about various libraries and librarianship.

PO2– Identify the information sources and services. Demonstrate ability to access, evaluate and use a variety of relevant information sources.

PO3– Understanding about the information processing, managing and retrieval methods along with practical knowledge on classification and cataloguing.

PO4– Able to design, manage and valuate information systems and programme.

PO5-Should able to demonstrate understanding on library networking, library automation and web-based services.

PO6– Get acquainted with marketing of information and have a knowledge on the products and services associated with information marketing.

PO7– Able to demonstrate understanding of research methods, the ability to design a research project, and the ability to evaluate and synthesize research literature.

PO8– Ability to express thoughts and ideas effectively and efficiently.

PO9– Demonstrate the capacity to handle ICT in the learning process and also the library management software.

PSO1-To enable the students to understand the role of Libraries and Information Centres in socio-economic development of the society.

PSO2-To enhance the abilities of students for management of Libraries and Information Systems.

PSO3-To play a creative role during professional life through turning problems to opportunities and foster personal and organizational growth.

PROGRAMME: POST-GRADUATE IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

  1. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Towards becoming familiar with the idea of knowledge management and information transmission in libraries
  2. To comprehend the idea of research design and the tools and methods used to conduct research in the various branches of library and information science.
  3. To comprehend the numerous cutting-edge uses of IT in libraries with the idea of automation, planning, and implementation of libraries, as well as to research various library administration software modules.

2.PROGRAMME OUTCOME

On completion of the programme, the students will be able to;

PO1-Understand about the different libraries and information centres, its function and services.

PO2-Able to gain the skills to manage the library and information centres effectively.

PO3-Demonstrate the practical experience on knowledge, organisation with classification and cataloguing of print and digital documents.

PO4-Identification of information sources and services in the digital environment.

PO5– Awareness of important and trending information issues and the ability to handle the social impact of these trends.

PO6– Demonstrate understanding of research methods, the ability to design a research project in the field of library and information science.

PO7-Comprehend the preservation and conservation of library documents for posteriority.

PO8-Gain proficiency in handling various library management software.

PSO1-Create a workforce with professional values, a commitment to excellence, and attitudes for libraries and information Centres.

PSO2– Prepare students for advanced-level employment in the administrative context of a modern library.

PSO3- Provide instruction and training in knowledge management and communication.

PSO4– Provide the pupils the professional skills they’ll need to use advanced information technology Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) in libraries.
